5 things to do in ANTIBES
Where is Antibes?
Antibes is located in the southeastern region of France, specifically in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It sits along the Mediterranean coastline, between the cities of Nice and Cannes.
Antibes is a 42 minute car drive from Nice, or a 20 minute train journey. When visiting the South of France, I recommend renting a car as there is so much to explore on the French Riviera which is much more accessible by car.
1. Visit the Picasso Museum
Located within the former residence of the Grimaldi family, next door to the Notre-Dame-de-la-Platéa Cathedral, The Picasso Museum boasts a remarkable collection of Picasso’s works, many of which were created during his prolific stay in Antibes in 1946. As you wander through the museum’s halls, you’ll encounter an eclectic mix of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and drawings, each offering a glimpse into Picasso’s diverse artistic oeuvre.
Beyond the artworks themselves, the museum provides insight into Picasso’s creative process and his fascination with the Mediterranean region. Personal mementos, photographs, and letters on display offer a deeper understanding of the artist’s connection to Antibes and the profound impact it had on his work.
One of the highlights of the museum is the breathtaking panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea from the château’s terraces, which served as a muse for Picasso during his time in Antibes. Allowing you to marvel at the same vistas that inspired some of his most iconic pieces, including “La Joie de Vivre” and “Satyr, Faun, and Centaur.”
2. Visit the Old Town
Wander through narrow passages adorned with colourful shutters and blooming bougainvillea. Each corner reveals a piece of the past, from ancient ramparts to medieval churches, bearing witness to centuries of maritime heritage. The winding streets will lead you to the many cafes and restaurants that provide local cuisine and wine.
3.Visit Port Vauban
Take a leisurely stroll along Europe’s largest marina, Port Vauban, and marvel at the luxurious yachts that bob in the azure waters. Watch fishermen unload their catch of the day or sip on a café au lait at one of the charming waterfront cafés, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this bustling harbor.
4. Relax on the beaches
Indulge in the sun-soaked beaches that fringe Antibes’ coastline. From the family-friendly shores of Plage de la Salis to the secluded coves of Cap d’Antibes, there’s a spot for every beach lover to unwind, swim, or simply bask in the Mediterranean sunshine.
5. Discover Fort Carré
Step back in time at Fort Carré, a formidable fortress that has guarded Antibes’ coastline for centuries. From meandering through historic streets to soaking up the sun on pristine beaches, Antibes offers a delightful blend of culture, history, and natural beauty that promises an unforgettable experience for every visitor.
