Cassis
Discovering the charm of Cassis, a quaint village by the Mediterranean
Last summer we had the most amazing mini break in Cassis, I didn’t have much knowledge or expectations of the place beforehand as I hadn’t heard many people mention Cassis when talking about the south of France. However, it is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited, and definitely worth visiting.
Where is Cassis?
Only a 35 minute drive from Marseille and located along the stunning coastline of the French Mediterranean, the picturesque village of Cassis is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. With its charming harbour, vibrant markets, and breathtaking cliffs, Cassis offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history.
Things to do…
Parc national des Calanques
Our favourite part of the trip to Cassis was without a doubt the hike through the calanques. The parc national des calanques is a protected marine and terrestrial area located between Marseille and Cassis. Home to over 900 plant species, 80 species of birds, 60 marine species and a vast collection of reptiles, the parc national des calanques is an area of incredible beauty full of diversity.
The journey is tough, and much more physical than I anticipated, but so worth it for the view and to appreciate the beauty of the coastline of crystal-clear waters. There are several trails to choose from including some that are suitable for families, as well as more advanced for the experienced hiker.
Another option would be to book a boat tour of the calanques, a lot of the tours include kayak or paddle boarding to get closer to the beach and explore the sea caves that are found hiding in the coves of the calanques.
